5 Tips for Spiritual Spring Cleaning



Attention Moon Children! Spring is almost upon us and if you’re lagging on your New Year’s Resolution or you missed the mark for your fresh start of 2018, this post is for you. It’s time for clean slates and to rid ourselves of any toxic energy that might be surrounding us. Even though I don’t pretend to have it all figured out in any capacity, here are my 5 tips for spiritual spring cleaning. I hope you find this post helpful and one of these tips makes a difference in your life.

1. Get Organized

I know this one may seem obvious considering it’s what most people think of when they hear the phrase “spring cleaning” but I think we fail to realize how a cluttered living environment effects out psyche day in and day out. If your car has slowly become a trashcan (me) or your closet floor has become a graveyard of outfits that didn’t quite work out (also me), it’s time to clear it out. A clean and simple space has been proven to reduce stress. I started out by simplifying my space. I got rid of a plethora of things that I simply didn’t use and took a more minimalistic approach. I found this to not only be more functional but my mind also felt more at ease.

Set aside a half hour to an hour each day and tackle something small first. Maybe you’re starting by making your bed every morning. Maybe you’re starting with your organizing your silverware drawer or your purse – anywhere is a great place to start.

2. Sage It Out

The word ‘sage’ comes from the Latin word “salvere,” meaning “to be saved.” The burning of this plant is called “smudging” and this act is performed for spiritual cleansing. I don’t believe that burning sage is a cure-all by any means but rather a ritualistic way to rid yourself of negative or stagnant energy.

When I’m in a spiritual funk, I open up all the windows, doors, cabinets and drawers (yes, negative energy has a habit of clinging to any small hiding space it can find) and bring my smoking sage bundle from room to room. I usually follow up by audibly repeating a few mantras such as “I rid my sacred space of any and all negative energy” or “I invite only positive energy into my home“. You can also smudge yourself! Work from the crown of your head to the tips of your toes. Let those negatives vibes know they ain’t welcome here 🙂 (**Palo Santo or incense works here, too.)

3. Clean Up Your Social Media

This one is important so stay with me. If you follow an account on Instagram that makes you feel bad about yourself, unfollow. If you’re friends with someone on Facebook who only seems to only post hateful things, unfriend them or hide their posts. If you’ve gotten into the habit of checking up on people who do not directly contribute to your life in a positive way, cut it out, man! Social media is more a part of our lives than ever before so it’s imperative that we at least try to filter what we’re internalizing. Feel free to utilize this tip over and over again until your feed is reflecting the positivity inside yourself.

4. Cut Ties

Just like tip #3, this one is about clearing space for relationships that no longer serve you. I think of this as less about cutting people out of your life and more about making room for new people to enter. Maybe it’s a relative or a close friend. Maybe it’s a significant other. Sometimes you have to let these people know that you still love them and you’re always here for them but continuing to spend your time with them is ultimately hindering your growth. Self-respect and boundaries are always more important than trying to please everyone. Love yourself first.

5. Start Journaling

I first started to journal when I was about 12 years old. I always found that pouring everything out of my soul and onto a piece of paper was deeply therapeutic. Do I really gain anything from it? Yes. Am I happy that most of those journals are locked away in my father’s attic? Also, YES.  Think of a journal as a physical place you can visit to empty your thoughts – a “brain dump” if you will. This technique can include things like lists, things you’re grateful for, hopes, dreams, something that made you angry or frustrated you, affirmations, love letters. Get. It. Out. There are no rules or limits. Just a safe place to express yourself.
